Free School Parking
Sent to Rother District Council and also featured in the local press (Battle Observer)
It once was free, but now they do charge
The amount is small, but adds up quite large
April fools, what a perfect day to start
Pay for an hour, but only need a part
To drop off our kids, near to the school
To get them there safe, protect them all
They charge us all, even the disabled
Parents and workers, we are all labelled
So please be kind, just give us a break
Give us somewhere, for our cars to wait
It is not so much, that we ask of you

This poem was written about the decision by Rother District Council to start charging for people to park in the car park when dropping off their children at Battle and Langton School. Battle is a rural area where a lot of the children do not live within walking distance of the school, the public transport is dreadful, so some parents do need to take their kids by car. I know a lot of parents drive their kids when they could use other transport. The only thing that has changed since the introduction of parking charges is that more parents now park illegally and dangerously on the double yellow lines outside the school now instead of safely in the car park.
