This page contains loads of black and white photos of Hastings in East Sussex that I have taken. Most were taken as colour (or color as any Americans visiting would spell it) pictures, then converted them to black and white, others were actually taken as black and white pictures. All of these are digital photos, taken with a variety of different cameras over the last few years.

Black and white Hastings, East Sussex photos: Black and white Hastings, East Sussex photos: A picture of some the rooftops of Hastings in East Sussex. Hastings has many hills and cliffs, which are great for getting photos like this that show places from angles you do not normally see. The best places I find are up on top of East Hill and West Hill, especially up by Hastings Castle. |
This photo was taken from West Hill up near Hastings Castle looking towards East Hill with the houses of Hastings Old Town in the middle. On the far right hand side of the picture you can just make out some of the fishing huts. In the middle, near the top is the East Hill cliff lift, with its castle shaped station. |
Another photo from West Hill in Hastings looking to East Hill, but this one a bit nearer and you can just make out the path that goes up to the top. As part of the Hastings bonfire celebrations some of the Hastings Runners run up the hundreds of stairs to light the huge touch up in the country park. The bonfire celebrations are very popular and attract people from all over East Sussex and beyond. |

This photo shows waves crashing on the shore down near all the fishing boats in Hastings Old Town. The sunset behind it was very pretty colours, it looks nice converted to a black and white picture, but I may add the colour photo too soon. |
This picture shows Hastings Pier being battered by waves during a VERY rough day. This photo was taken from the safety (from the storm at least!) of Bottle Alley, a covered area that runs the whole way from Hastings pier to St Leonards. The Sussex coastline always seems to get it bad. |
This is a black and white photo of Hastings Pier at Sunrise, taken from St Leonards. It does not show up well in this picture, but there were actually hundreds of seagulls swarming round the end of the pier, maybe people were on there fishing? |
Another photo of Hastings old town, this one taken from in the middle of the road outside Underwater World (What used to be the Sealife Centre). Up on the left is the fishermans museum and the fishermans huts, up in the distance is the main part of Hastings Old Town, including some great places for fish and chips! (unsubtle plug: Blue Dolphin does the best in Sussex in my humble opinion) |
A photograph of some of the fishing boats down in Hastings Old Town, As you can see this was taken after a few days of bad weather, well typical Hastings weather actually! I love taking photos down between all the fishing boats, there are always so many interesting things around, so many strange shapes and textures. |
A black and white picture of water flowing over the rocks on the beach at Hastings. Normally I like fast photos of water that freezes the movement, but with this I did the opposite (ISO 50, 1/6 Shutter speed) which slightly blurred the movement of the water instead. |
This photograph is the view through a gap in the harbour wall down near Hastings Old Town. In the distance is East Hill with its cliff lift, more fishing boats and some fishing huts. From the angle in this picture you can see that unlike the other views of East Hill where it looks more like a normal hill, the front of it is all steep cliffs. |
This photograph is of waves crashing on the sea wall opposite the Pig in Paradise pub. We get some really huge waves down here sometimes. Its quite funny, on days like that 99% of locals seem to try to get away from it, the other 1% (me included) are down there with our cameras taking photos. Thats the nutty thing about us dedicated photographers, other people see tornados, storms and hurricanes and think "Run away", we on the other hand are more likely to running towards them, thinking "Wow, that will make a great photo!" |
Another picture of the waves hitting Hastings seafront. If you look closely at this photograph you can see some poor workman getting hit by the water. You would have thought Hastings Borough Council would have not planned work to be carried out at the time of year when it always gets that rough. |
In this photograph you can see the strange shape of East Hill in Hastings, it almost looks like a giant dome. On the left of the photo is the edge of the closest thing Hastings has to a theme park, it only has about a dozen rides and they are all pretty small, but its fun for smaller kids, All of Sussex is pretty bad for rides etc. On the right of the photo is the RNLI Lifeboat station. |
This black and white photo shows one of Hastings many fishing boats returning to shore. From the interest of all the seagulls in this picture I presume it must have been quite a good catch. Hastings has a great tradition of fishing going back a long way There are still places (sadly not as many as there used to be) around here where you can buy the fish freshly caught the same day. |
A photograph of the boating lake on Hastings seafront, with some of the many of the many places to eat and drink reflecting in the water, such as the Regal Restaurant, Galleon Fish Bar and The Cutter Pub. This photo was taken early in the morning, just after sunrise. |
