Photos of Hastings pier in East Sussex by Dean Thorpe
Like many other seaside towns Hastings in East Sussex has a pier, sadly also like some others it has seen better days and has now been closed due to big bits falling off of it! Most of these photos were taken while it was still open, but the one taken under the pier was since the closure and it did make me feel rather nervous, especially considering the number of chunks of metal that can be found along the beach! There are a few groups of people trying to save the pier, some want to return it to being a proper pier, others want to turn it into new things, but having seen the amount of damage I personally think the current pier is beyond saving. If it was up to me I would pull the whole thing down and create a brand new one, rather than patch that one up and have more problems in the future. It only seems a few years since they did a big reopening down there with flashy (£100,000+ in a deprived area of Sussex!) boats for sale along the front and many shops inside. I just hope they sort something out soon, if not it will finish up like Brighton's West Pier, a falling down pile of mangled metal.
