Diggerland in Kent is an adventure park all based around diggers, dumper trucks, cranes and other building related vehicles. A Bob the builder fans dream come true! Its run by a company that hires that sort of equipment, so it is all real and not all fake plastic amusement rides. Kids and adults get to control all sorts of big and small equipment in a safe way. Please scroll down to below the photos to see my full review of Diggerland.
The good bits
If you have a kid into diggers, Bob the builder and stuff like that, then they will love it at Diggerland. My 10 year old daughter is a total tom boy and she loved it.
Its somewhere different. Most places you go to you spend a lot of time comparing it to other places, but that is much harder to do with Diggerland as I don't know of anywhere else quite like it
All the staff were extremely helpful, most places we go there are good and bad staff, but I can honestly not say anything bad about any of the Diggerland Kent staff.
We went to Diggerland on a Monday in the summer holidays and we only had to wait a couple of minutes at the most to go on anything.
Once you pay to get in, most of it is free, which is good.
Its great fun! I had never controlled a JCB or many of the other things I tried at Diggerland before and that was really fun.
Its slightly educational. Some of the diggers and JCB's do have limited controls (most don't go anywhere, you just control the arm bit), but the controls are correct, so if you fancy becoming a JCB operator then Diggerland is a good place to go and try one out.
The shop was good, most of the prices were fair, some good cheap bits for those on a budget that want to take something home. Everything from T-shirts with Diggerland or JCB logos on them, to Lego construction sets, plus the usual car stickers, badges, pens etc.
The bad bits
The price of getting into Diggerland is a bit expensive for what it is, £60 (July 2008 Price) for a family of 4 is a lot of money for somewhere that small. Its not much more to go to somewhere like Chessington or Thorpe Park and there is a lot more to do at places like that.
Some of Diggerland is not very disabled friendly, the staff did offer to help me, but its still hard. As an example there a ride called Spindizzy, which was great fun, but the stairs you had to go up to get on it were a bit wobbly and did not feel very supportive. Climbing in and out of the larger JCB's was also quite hard, creating a more disabled friendly access on one JCB would not be that hard
Needs better sign posting, I did not see a single Diggerland road sign until we were on the last roundabout. Not sure if I would have ever found it if it was not for our Sat Nav!
Even after paying £15 there are still a few rides you have to pay for, such as the dodgems and some of the smaller coin operated rides, I really do think that the dodgems should be included in the price.
Strange restrictions! My 10 year old daughter was allowed to drive a full size Police 4x4 and a huge JCB (both with a member of Diggerland staff), She drove Go-kart's, operated smaller diggers and even drove a cool JCB Robot 160 (That's what they are called, it is actually a big thing, not a little robot!) on her own, but was not allowed to drive a small dumper truck or some strange small cars without one of us with her?
The TV ad is annoying, that song always gets stuck in my head 8o)
Overall
Diggerland is a very fun and interesting day out and I would recommend it to most people, I am not sure I would want to go every week, but once or twice a year would be great. I think a lot of teenagers might find it a bit boring, but younger kids would love it. I would probably give it about 7 out of 10. I would have given it an 8, but I do think it is a little limited for the price. I will probably go again next summer to see what else they add, as it does have a lot of potential and with a little bit more work could really be serious competition for larger theme parks.
One important tip: If you go to Diggerland when its sunny it gets very dusty and from what the staff were saying it gets very muddy when wet, so don't wear your best clothes and make sure its something lose as it will make getting in and out of the diggers etc. much easier.
All of this is based on Diggerland Adventure Park in Kent, I have never been to the others (yet), so they may be very different.
