This is a list of mostly Medical Jargon and Acronyms that has been created to help people understand all the weird things doctors and nurses seem to say. There is nothing worse than somebody saying things like:
"A NHS STR worker told the SU that the local PCT advise the CPA when passing ADHD clients with PTSD from CRHT's to CPN's from the CMHT before giving SSRI's or CBT."
and sitting there thinking what the hell did they just say!
In case you are wondering the less (not much!) jargon version of that would be:
"A National Health Service Support Time Recovery worker told the Service Users that the local Primary Care Trust advise the Care Programme Approach when passing Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder clients with Post-traumatic Stress Disorder from Crisis Resolution Home Treatment Teams to Community Psychiatric Nurses from the Community Mental Health Teams before giving Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor's or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy."
Still not great I know!
Trust me, I have been there myself many times and hate that feeling. Things do seem to be improving and they are starting to use more plain English, but should help give everybody a little helping hand. There are probably a lot of important ones that are missing from this guide, if you think of any, please send them and help keep the list as up to date as possible. All of these are compiled from many information sources, both on the internet and paper based. I have included a number of useful non medical terms too.

A reduction in the number of red blood cells in the body, which is measured as a fall in haemoglobin (Hb) in the blood. This can be a sign of bleeding, eg from the bowel.

Anastomosis (in bowel surgery).
The joining together of two ends of healthy bowel after the section of diseased bowel has been cut out (resected) by the surgeon.
Angina.
A sense of suffocation or suffocating pain in the chest, neck or arm, associated with heart disease, and usually brought on by exercise.
