I am involved with a local charity called Focus on Mental Health, which as the name suggests is a charity that deals with mental health issues. I have been going to the meetings for a few years now and recently became one of the charity trustees. Some parts of the local mental health services are very good, but some are not and we are involved with trying to make things better be helping fight cutbacks etc. We are also very interested in education and increasing understanding of mental health issues, mental health problems affect 1 in 4 people, but there is still a stigma attached to them and that needs to change. A lot of the members are also involved with other charities and that's good as it helps us get a much better picture of what is going on in the health care industry. We have somebody working for the local NHS mental health services that attends most of the meetings and they keeps us informed with how things are going for the staff and patients. Feel free to contact us or even come to a meeting if you want to bring up an issue or want more information.
Official description.
Focus on Mental Health is a group of people from Hastings and Rother who meet each month to talk about a range of local mental health issues. Many of us have used the services in the past and some still do. We want to ensure that the services meet our needs. We are involved in the planning of future services and monitoring the quality of the present services. We have good relations with health care managers and planners who often join us to hear our opinions and respond to our concerns.
The group started about 1995, to give an organised response from the point of view of service users to the plans to close Queen Charlottes Hospital.
